In winter, Florence sparkles as the city gets ‘dressed up’ for the season. Lights, trees and ribbons line the streets, while stores call to us with irresistibly glittering window displays. The holidays are a time for friends and family, but also to dress more formally and pull out special accessories. Be careful, though. Dressing festively must be done tastefully, or you could look like a Christmas tree. Sequins are pretty, if appropriate, and sweaters with Rudolph or Jack Frost can be cute, but you don’t want to give off the Bridget Jones family Christmas party vibe.

Florentine women are known for being both stylish and alluring, possessing an innate sense of the right time and place for certain types of outfits. For daytime, it is best to convey your holiday spirit by sporting soft sweaters and colorful tights. For dinners with relatives, don something feminine and elegant, never too revealing or sexy. A New Year’s Eve event among friends, however, is the right time to show off with a more outrageously bold and experimental ensemble (see ‘STYLE NOTES’ at the foot of this article).

And, of course, none of these holiday looks are complete without red, the reigning color of the season, and gold, its perfect accent.

This is the season to shine—with style!

STYLE NOTES, Holiday 2014:

Studs are finally on their way out. Instead, wear cascades of beads and sequins. Top seasonal silhouettes are ’50s-style feminine for the curvier ladies and ’60s-inspired boyish cuts for the more slender. Lace can be the ‘cherry on top’ of your holiday look.
