Are you a marathon runner and taking part in the Firenze Marathon on November 29? If you’re in need of a cause to make the pain worthwhile, we’ve hatched a plan! (And even if you’re not running, please read on.)

The Florentine has joined forces with Fondazione Meyer to raise funds for Florence’s much-loved children’s hospital. All funds raised will go towards Meyer’s popular play centre and facilities aimed at making a child’s time in hospital an all-round positive and comfortable experience. The ludoteca forms the very heart of Meyer with its light-filled space, bursting with colour, toys and activities, including a library cart, pet therapy, and even clowns and musicians who bring joy and relief to kids and parents alike.

There are two ways to support Meyer:

1. Join TF’s friend and columnist Suzi Jenkins on November 29 as she takes on the 26.21875 miles (42.195 kilometres) along Florence’s cobblestone streets and viali. If you’d like to run for Meyer and keep Suzi company, email us at redazione@theflorentine.net for more information.

2. Make a donation today through www.runformeyer.it.

Whether you run with The Florentine/Meyer team or make a donation today through our fundraising effort, we hope you will participate—and spread the word.

Louise Holm Ferragamo: “Our five-year-old daughter was hospitalized at Meyer in a diabetic coma. What was a traumatic and painful experience for our family was a different story for our daughter. She has no bad memories of the time she spent at Meyer; in fact, she talks about Meyer as ‘her hospital’, as a fun and lovely second home. The playtime, clowns, dogs and musicians proved a welcome distraction from the pain and the fear. Thanks to the amazing doctors and the right treatment, today she’s a happy 12-year-old girl living a normal active life. Our experience leaves me no doubt that the warm and kid-friendly environment played a massive role in our daughter’s fast recovery. I will never be able to give back enough to Meyer.”
